Waushara Industries volunteers and staff recognized

The Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program recently recognized program volunteers for contributions during the 2017-2018 school year. The recognition event was sponsored by Thrivent Financial.     Jan Novak, Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program Chair, expressed gratitude for the hundreds of hours volunteers contributed to this project. Novak said, “Our program truly could not operate without the commitment of Waushara Industries volunteers and employees. To watch this group in action is to see a spirit of support, cooperation and pride in knowing their efforts are helping others.” The partnership makes a significant impact.     The Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program provides weekend meals for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. During the 2017-2018 school year, an average of 140 elementary students participated in the program each week. Students receive 5-6 non-perishable food items along with coupons redeemable for milk, eggs, or bread. Waushara Industries volunteers are critical to the program. Volunteers packed 5052 weekend meals and distributed more than 27,000 items of food to area students. Waushara Industries drivers deliver totes of food to two of the three participating schools.     In addition to the critical volunteer workforce provided by Waushara Industries volunteers, the program depends on the financial support it receives from area foundations, individuals, churches, businesses, civic, and community based organizations.     The Backpack Nutrition Program is an activity of Vision 2020, a committee of the Waushara Prevention Council, Inc. The Waushara Prevention Council, Inc. is a non-profit network of community members and organizations that collaborate and advocate for effective prevention programs serving Waushara County.
