Wild Rose Ladycats lose to Pittsville Lady Panthers
The Wild Rose High School volleyball team lost their match on Oct. 3 during a 5 set match against Pittsville.
“The girls let down a little, but kept fighting and that’s fantastic,” said Wild Rose Head Coach Jason Kirby. “The girls kept playing hard and that was key.”
Olivia Soper put together a 3-point service run to give the hosts a 5-point spread. For the remainder of the game, the difference was 4, 5, or 6 until the hosts finished the game on top, 25-19.
The visitors jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second game. Wild Rose could only manage to creep up on sideouts, with the exception of one service point. Pittsville put together a 4-point service run along the way as the Lady Panthers continued to pull away. Emily Carlson had a 3-point service run late in the game before Pittsville captured a 25-8 win on a 2-point service run.
Wild Rose started the third game out with a 2-0 lead behind Elia Eggum’s service, but it was hard to keep the lead. The score was tied nine times in the game as both teams fought for control. Julia Redmond put together a 3-point service run to give the visitors a 1-point lead early on; however, this lead would change along the way. Redmond later added a 4-point service run to give Pittsville a 5-point lead near the end. After a few sideouts, the Lady Panthers came out on top 25-18 with two service points from Durrant.
Pittsville took a 2-0 lead behind Durrant’s serving in the fourth game. Madalyn Carpenter soon game the visitors a 6-point lead with a 3-point service run. The hosts found themselves trailing throughout the game until the end after 2-point services from Orria Wood, Dalene Sherburn, and Lacy Hackney. The Ladycats eventually took the game, 25-23 on a Carissa Erickson kill for a sideout.
Durrant again got Pittsville out to a short lead in game five, forcing Wild Rose to work out a deficit. Cammie Reno extended the visitor’s lead to 4 on a short service run, but Soper closed the gap to 1 on a short service run for the hosts. The deficit went back to being 3 before Sherburn tied the score at 10 with a short Wild Rose service. It didn’t take long for Pittsville to regain the lead, then get the 15-11 win with Bekah Downs serving the final two points.
Lacy Hackney had 8 service points and 3 service aces for Wild Rose, while Elia Eggum had 16 assists. Dalene Sherburn had 15 digs and Anna Caswell had 11 kills.
