Wautoma Lady Hornets end basketball season with 16 wins

The Lady Hornets traveled to Lakeside Lutheran for the second round of regionals on Feb. 24. Lakeside Lutheran took the win from Wautoma, 55-46, ending the Lady Hornet’s 2022/23 basketball season.

Both teams started out evenly matched, with the score tying up at 2 points only a couple minutes into the game. Lakeside was soon able to get an 8-point lead over Wautoma, and continued to add to their score throughout the first half. The Lady Hornets were able to score some 2 point layups, but were down 16-22 going into the second half.

Lakeside continued to do well, racking up a 13-point lead a few minutes into the half. Alayna Panich was able to get the Lady Hornets some points with a 3-pointer. Bri Buechner and Montana Groskreutz kept the momentum going, each adding 3-points to the board to close the Lakeside lead to only 6 points. The Lady Hornets were finally able to close Lakeside’s to 35-38 with only 7 minutes left in the game. Wautoma’s scoring streak did not last, with Lakeside ultimately taking the win, 55-46.

Montana Groskreutz scored 15 points, closely followed by Bri Buechner with 14 points. Alayna Panich added 10 points to the board. Sydney Dunn scored 3 points and Allison Botters and Bryn Gunderson each had 2 points.

The Wautoma Lady Hornets ended their 2022/23 season with an overall record of 16-10 and 6-4 in the South Central Conference.
