Wautoma Hornets score sixth straight win

The Wautoma Hornets scored their sixth straight win against the Lourdes Academy Knights, 82-60, on Jan. 17.

The Knights were first to score after the tipoff with 2 points. The Hornets were quick to take back the lead, with Logan Dunn 3-pointers putting them ahead 8-4. The Hornets kept sinking the ball for 2 points. Mitchell Wing attempted to close the Knight’s deficit with a 3-pointer leaving them behind by 3 points.

Wautoma players were still able to keep the ball from the Knight’s net. Knights offense attempted to close the Hornets’ lead, but both Dunn and Carson Armstrong were able to block their attempts. Landon Kalata took his chance to steal the ball to help Brett Salm score 2-points, increasing the Hornets lead 19-11. The Hornets were on a roll, with multiple 3-pointers from Armstrong and Joseph Ascher. The Hornets were able to rack up a 48-25 lead by the end of the first half of the game.

The Knights went into the second half with more energy in an attempt to decrease the Hornets lead. Lucas Schettle was the first to score in the second half, after a fast break to the net putting 2 points on the board for Lourdes Academy. Knights defense slowed the Hornets down, but a 3-pointer from Salm helped increase their lead 53-27.

The Knights had a chance to close-in on the Hornet’s lead after 3-pointers from Schettle, Wing, and Jok Machiros closed the gap 39-59. Their attempts were no match for the Hornets, scoring a 82-60 win.

Joseph Ascher was on a roll, putting 33 points on the board with seven 3-pointers and 4 of 4 free throws. Carson Armstrong and Brett Salm each had 13 points. Armstrong scored three 3-pointers and 2 of 2 free throws while Salm scored three 3-pointers and recorded 11 rebounds. Landon Kalata scored 12 points, including two 3-pointers and 2 of 2 free throws. Logan Dunn put up 5 points, including one 3-pointer. Peter Idsvoog scored 4 points and Landon Keller 2.

The Hornets are now in a six game winning streak, moving the team to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
