Wautoma Hornets defeat Stanley-Boyd for regional win

The Wautoma Hornets swarmed together to sting the Stanley Boyd Orioles 83-70 for the first round of boys’ basketball regionals on Feb. 28.

Stanley Boyd was able to maintain a 2 to 4 points lead to start the first half out. Carson Armstrong was able to tie the score up at 21 points following 2 successful free throws with 6:43 on the board. Joseph Ascher went on to add 2 more points to the board, finally giving the Hornets the chance to take the lead.

Wautoma was able to rise to a 10-point lead as the end of the half neared. Landon Karlen was able to help close the Orioles deficit with 2 free throws at the line, with 2:44 left in the half. Stanley-Boyd’s Henry Hoel also stepped to the line with only 9.1 seconds left in the half. The Hornets were able to take a 40-33 lead going into the second half.

The Hornets kept control of the court in the second half, leading to their 83-70 regional quarterfinal victory.

Joseph Ascher shot to the top of the scoreboard with 34 points on the board, including three 3-pointers and 5 of 5 free throws. Ascher made 6 rebounds and 2 steals to lead the Hornets to victory. Carson Armstrong was able to add 26 points on the board, including two 3-pointers and 8 of 8 free throws. Armstrong also had 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal and block.

Logan Dunn put 9 points on the board and went 3 for 4 at the free throw line. Dunn helped his team with 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Landon Kalata put 6 points on the board, Landon Keller 4 points, and Brett Salm and Peter Idsvoog 2 points each. Kalata was able to score with two 3-pointers, and recorded 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Keller was able to add 2 rebounds and assists and 1 steal and block throughout the night. Salm recorded 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, and Idsvoog recorded 2 rebounds and 1 assist.
