Golden Eagles down Hornets

The Wautoma softball team fell to the Mauston Golden Eagles 7-4 in South Central Conference action on April 12 at home.

Mauston opened up the top half of the first scoring two runs with a couple walks and a double sprinkled in making it 2-0. The Hornets responded with a run of their own off of an Alyssa Borchardt lead-off single and stolen base, followed by an Avery Lehr sacrifice fly and Kaisee Conger RBI groundout.

Both teams were shut out in the second inning, but the Golden Eagles bats ignited for three more runs in the third coming from two singles followed up with a base clearing triple and sacrifice fly to make it 5-1. Mauston added one more in the fourth from a walk and RBI double to stretch the lead to 6-1.

Wautoma was able to get a spark in the fifth starting with a Maddie Peterman fielder’s choice, Katy Bray walk, MacKenzie Koats single and a two-out Borchardt two RBI single.  Koats would come across on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-4.

The Hornets couldn’t muster up any more offense while Mauston tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to create the 7-4 final score. Borchardt topped the hitting for the Hornets going 2x3 (2 RBIs, 2 SB’s). Wautoma falls to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in SCC play.
