Focus 2025 - What’s the Buzz about Student Assessments in Wautoma, WI?

Wisconsin schools are mandated to follow the newest federal School Improvement legislation, known as ESSA, the Every Student Succeeds Act. ESSA was signed into law in December of 2015.  ESSA took full effect during the 2017-18 school years, which gave all states some key elements to follow.  The primary focus of this article will be to inform local stakeholders about student assessment information that impacts the teaching and learning for our district, but is mirrored in all public and some private schools in the state of Wisconsin and across the United States. Wisconsin gives six annual state tests for the different age level groups. These tests are referred to as a summative assessment. Summative assessments are designed to evaluate learning by providing cumulative snapshots usually through a standardized process that are typically school, district or state-centered.  These tests answer “are all of our students meeting the standards?” Summative assessments are designed to evaluate and report on cumulative student learning. The six Wisconsin Statewide Tests and brief descriptions are listed below:
