May is national bike month. What does that mean? Well, if you love getting outside and riding a bike, May kicks off the riding season with a bang by being bike month. So, let’s get out there and ride.

A few things to remember:

Wear a helmet. Make sure that the helmet fits on top of your head, not tipped back or forward. Also, remember after a crash or any impact that affects your helmet, visible or not, replace it immediately.

Is the bike safe to ride? Make sure everything is tight and straight; check your tires to make sure they are properly pumped up.

Do the cars see you? Do not assume you are being seen. Wear bright clothes to increase visibility. Try to ride were drivers can see you.

Do cars know what you are planning to do? Use hand signals, make eye contact with the driver to make sure he sees you and ride on the correct side of the road staying close to the edge. Street signs are for bikes too. A stop sign means everyone should stop, not just cars.

Biking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Just remember to think safety first. Watch the Waushara County Health Department Facebook page this month for a chance to win just by riding your bike.
