Redgranite Correctional Institution fights against childhood hunger
Inmates at the Redgranite Correctional Institution selected the Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program as a recipient of funds raised during their ice cream fundraiser in efforts to address childhood hunger.
The Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program provides weekend meals for economically disadvantaged students in four Waushara County elementary schools. Meals include five non-perishable food items and fresh food coupons for milk, eggs, or bread. The program expects to serve 250 students each week.
Jan Novak, Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program Chair, acknowledged the importance of local donations. Novak said, “The free and reduced lunch rate in area schools is alarming. The rates are an indication of the economic struggles facing many area families. Our program serves students in schools where the free and reduced lunch rate is as high as 68.1 percent. We appreciate the commitment of the inmates at the Redgranite Correctional Institution to help us fight childhood hunger here in Waushara County. Donations from organizations, businesses, churches, fraternal organizations, office groups, sports teams, and individuals provide critical financial support to our program.” The Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program is supported entirely by grants and community donations.
Vision 2020, a committee of the Waushara Prevention Council, Inc., works with others in the community to reduce the impact of economic insecurity and build a community of opportunity.
