Aaron Hernandez, 23, Wautoma, was traveling northbound on County Road EE, just north of Blackhawk Avenue. Burkert struck the mailbox and post, then over-corrected to the left and crossed the center line and became disabled in the road, with the rear drive shaft dislodged and rear axle askew. Burkert put the truck in four wheel drive and pulled to east shoulder. When asked if he had fallen asleep, the answer was yes. Burkert stated there was a silver Chevrolet that was partially in his lane so he had moved to avoid that vehicle and lost it on the gravel and got sucked into the ditch. Driver stated he went to bed around 1 a.m. after working on his truck all night after work. Burkert did not want an ambulance, but believes he struck his head on the steering wheel.
