Yeska Brothers Farm presents at Wild Rose Kiwanis meeting

Subhead

On Nov. 17 Randy and Megan Yeska gave a presentation to the Wild Rose Kiwanis on Zoom.  They shared information about their farming operations, which have been in the family more than 60 years.  The farm began with Randy’s parents, and all of his siblings have been involved in the farming operations, along with many of the children, grandchildren, and other relatives of the Yeska family, making it truly a multi-generational family farming operation.  Over time, the Yeska Brothers farms have grown many vegetables, including potatoes, peppers, peas, beans, sweet and field corn.

Over the last few decades, the Yeska family has expanded their operations to also include growing Christmas trees.  They explained the year-long process involved in growing and producing Christmas trees, along with various locations where the trees are eventually sold nationwide, including Chicago, Pennsylvania, and California.

Information was shared about the present shortage of Christmas trees, and how labor intensive it is to grow them. The second Saturday after Thanksgiving was noted as being the busiest day of the year for people to purchase a Christmas tree.

The family also shared safety measures being put in place in their Christmas tree farm this year to keep people safe from COVID-19. Many memories of farming in our local community were shared during the meeting, and Kiwanis members appreciated the opportunity to talk directly with a local farm family and learn more about the experiences of local farmers.

The Wild Rose Kiwanis meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month, presently on Zoom.  If you are interested in learning more about the Wild Rose Kiwanis organization, or would like to join, please check out their Facebook page or email Jennifer Koeppl at jkoeppl@koeppllaw.net.
