Ladycats advance to regional semifinals with win on Feb. 12

It wasn’t the best of games, but the Wild Rose Ladycats did enough to take the Pacelli Lady Cardinals down 41-27 in girls sub regional basketball action on Feb. 9, advancing the Ladycats to regional semifinals in Auburndale on Friday, Feb. 12.

“We made adjustments at halftime,” explained Head Coach Brett Brooks. “Clare Williams, in coming off the bench, shut down the girl she defended (doing a remarkable job despite the height difference). We made some free throws down the stretch which helped make the difference on the way to scoring 28 points in the second half while holding Pacelli back. We have to give Pacelli back. We have to give Pacelli credit – they fought hard, with the top 2 players doing all they could. I’m proud of the girls effort tonight, and look forward to traveling to Auburndale Friday.”

Wild Rose possessed a 12-9 lead late in the first half of play, but Pacelli had a surge to take the lead away from the hosts. Emma Van Order did the majority of the scoring for the visitors, with 10 points being credited to her, highlighted by a 3-point shot. Sami Miller also helped in acquiring the 18-13 lead for the Lady Cardinals with 6 points.

Torrance Marquez finished the half with 6 points for the Ladycats, starting with a 3-pointer. Orria Wood and Aryah Elm each kicked a 3-point shot. Wild Rose ended up with 6 fouls in the first half, and Pacelli 4.

Wild Rose worked on getting the lead back in the second half, beginning with a 3-point shot from Wood. Miller, however, wanted to keep Pacelli in the lead with a 3-pointer of her own.

Lacey Havlovitz whittled the Ladycat deficit down with 5 points, but it was Marissa Cartwright who retook the lead for Wild Rose with a free throw after being fouled on a basket, 24-23 with 11:44 showing on the clock. Pacelli temporarily took the lead back by 1 before Wild Rose carried it through to the end.

Wood put in another 5 points, including a free throw. Elm came up with a 3-point shot and 2 of 2 free throws as the hosts attempted to lengthen their lead despite all the missed shots or blocked shots. Wild Rose was successful with a lengthy pass around, and in keeping Pacelli from scoring. Pacelli became frustrated and fouled more, sending Wild Rose to the free throw line. Despite missing a number of the free throws, enough were made to help seal a victory. Marquez came up with 5 points, going 3-5 at the line. Havlovitz added 2 free throws to aid in the 41-27 win.

Miller put up 5 total points for Pacelli, and had very little help from 2 of her teammates on the scoring end in the half as the visitors took the loss. The team tallied 13 fouls in the half, with Anna Van Order fouling out with about 1:40 remaining in the game.

Wild Rose’s five scorers were led by Orria Wood and Torrance Marquez with 11 points each. Wood had two 3-point goals, while Marquez had one, and went 4-7 at the free throw line. Aryah Elm and Laney Havlovitz put up 8 points each, with Elm hitting two 3-point goals and 2 of 2 free throws, and Havlovitz hitting 4 of 8 throws.

The Ladycats were 12-21 at the free throw line, recorded 12 fouls and five 3-pointers in the game.

Pacelli’s four scorers were led by Emma Van Order with 12 points, hitting a 3-point goal. Sami Miller was right behind her with 11 points, including a 3-point goal.

The Lady Cardinals were 1-8 at the free throw line, recorded 17 fouls and two 3-pointers in the game.
