Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery Naturalist makes presentation to Wild Rose Kiwanis

Subhead

Joan Voigt has worked with Wisconsin DNR Wild Rose Fish Hatchery, as Naturalist Educator since the 100-year old hatchery was renovated in 2008 to provide a state of the art, bio-secure hatchery for fish production in Wisconsin.

The hatchery produces fish for inland lakes like walleye, northern pike, musky and lake sturgeon in our cool water hatchery.

Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery also raises introduced species including Chinook and Coho salmon, brown trout and steelhead (rainbow trout) for the Great Lakes in our cold water hatchery.

Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery is one of 11 state fish hatcheries raising fish to enhance the fishery for anglers in Wisconsin.

Joan’s presentation covered the history of Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery production, on introduction of invasive species and consequences to fish in Wisconsin waters, She also addressed challenges for hatcheries, renovations to make the hatchery a safe place to raise healthy fish free from potential contamination, and the Wild Rose hatchery’s part in Wisconsin’s fish production.  She expanded on the exhibits that can be viewed when the Education Center is open to visitors.

This presentation was held on Zoom with the Wild Rose Kiwanis meeting on Oct. 20. The Wild Rose Kiwanis meets the first and third Tuesday’s of each month. The meetings are held on Zoom until it is safe again to meet in person. To learn more about Wild Rose Kiwanis, check them out on Facebook.
