Take control of high blood pressure

Subhead

Did you know? Only about one in four adults with high blood pressure in the United States have it under control. The good news is that high blood pressure, a chronic illness that can be unsafe when not found or managed, can be controlled. While it is best to prevent high blood pressure before it becomes a problem, it is never too late to make a plan with your care team.

When not in control, high blood pressure can damage vital organs like the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes. The American Heart Association warns that, over time, high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, and other serious health effects. A great first step to avoid these risks is to schedule a visit with your care team to have your blood pressure checked.

High blood pressure often has no clear signs, so getting checked is critical. During the visit, your doctor can explain the numbers and what you can do to prevent or manage high blood pressure. A health educator may be part of your care team, too. They can answer your questions and help with a plan that works for you.

“Knowing, managing, and preventing are the keys to avoiding the long-term effects of high blood pressure,” says Dr. Javier Rincon of Family Health La Clinica. “Most people do not know that their pressure is high, so it is important to have it checked.” You can take steps to lower your risk or manage your high blood pressure by staying active and eating a mixed diet of whole foods. Some people may also need medication to manage their blood pressure.

Family Health La Clinica is a community health center with clinics in Wautoma, Beaver Dam, Mauston, Friendship, and Stevens Point. They offer primary medical and dental services, mental health counseling, and substance abuse services to people of all ages and income levels.
