Wild Rose School Board plans fan attendance for fall sports

Subhead

The Wild Rose School Board discussed fan attendance at high school fall sports during a Sept. 10 meeting.

Because of the COVID-19 situation, it was proposed that only players, coaches, and home fans would be allowed for contests. Two tickets would be allowed for each athlete for family members to attend, with bleachers being marked off at safe distances for seating at volleyball and football games. There will be 25 tickets available for students to acquire through a lottery drawing. Opposing players and coaches will be allowed without fans.

There will be no admission fee charged, no concessions available, and all attendees are required to wear face masks.

District administrator, Craig Hayes, read off protocols that other conference schools are taking in regards to fall sports. Live streaming was also mentioned as a possibility for the contests. The Board went on to approve the issuing of two tickets for each athlete to have family members attend, with one being an adult, for both indoor and outdoor activities (including middle school), with face masks being required. The issue will be revisited in October after the seasons have started.

In other business, Matt Tratz was approved as the JV Football Coach.

The fall musical was reconsidered because of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bees’ involvement with audience participation, and the special precautions being taken because of COVID-19. The directors now proposed performing “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” with just a handful of actors being needed, and not as many stage props are necessary. Only 100 tickets will be allowed for families of cast members for safe gatherings and social distancing. Broadcasting the performances to other rooms will be possible to allow for a bigger audience with social distancing. The alternative musical selection was approved by the Board.

An enrollment update was given, with the numbers slightly down. With adjustments being made because of students receiving virtual education.

The building and district goals for the 2019-20 school year were reviewed, and reports were given on how they were met or not because of COVID-19 closures/cancellations.

The first readings of revisions to board policies Section 5: Certified Personnel 5.24 and Section 6: Support Personnel which pertains to Employee Title IX Policies were approved. A revision to Section 9: Building and Sites 9.01 where School Facilities Use is concerned was also approved.

A report was given on how the first two weeks of the school year have gone with the COVID-19 protocols being in place. They have been going rather smoothly. The lunch program has the highest number of lunch participants it has had in years.

With Homecoming taking place on Oct. 16, alternative planning had to be considered. There will be no parade, no tailgate party, no dance, and no float building. There may be a small court presentation at halftime, an outdoor coronation the evening before with just 100 guests, maybe a band routine on the field at halftime with two tickets per band member allowed for halftime spectators leaving immediately after. Some spirit week activities have to be specifically worked out because of protocols as well.

The next Board meetings will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 24 and Oct. 8.
