Care for your heart this month and every month

Subhead

For American Heart Month, Family Health La Clinica will talk about heart disease to help lower the risk. Heart disease is a silent yet serious illness – many people, including children, do not know they have it until it affects their health. It is the leading cause of death for both men and women and accounts for one in every four deaths in the United States. There are steps you can take to prevent heart disease and live a longer, healthier life. Anyone can change their habits to lower their risk for heart disease.

Healthy eating and regular activity are both key. A healthy diet includes whole fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Eating less processed and salty foods is also a healthy choice. Along with better eating habits, getting up and moving your body can help lower heart disease risk. Two and a half hours of exercise each week is the target. “You can take control and make small changes to reduce your risk of heart disease. These daily actions can lower your risk, and you will feel better too,” says Dr. Javier Rincon, Family Practice Physician at Family Health La Clinica.

If you have a chronic illness like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, your heart disease risk is higher. Healthy choices can lower your risk for heart disease and help you manage chronic disease. Along with these healthy changes, medication may also be a part of your care plan. If you need a medical provider to help you manage your care and would like to schedule with Family Health located at 400 South Townline Road in Wautoma, call toll free at 1-800-942-5330.
