Cub Scout Pack 3650 of Wild Rose/Wautoma/ Redgranite build U.S. Flag disposal drop boxes

Scouts from Pack 3650 presented a Flag Disposal Drop Box to the members of the Wild Rose American Legion Daniel Dopp Post 370 where the drop box is mounted outside the building. Members of Post 370 will collect the flags until they will be properly retired. Scouts also presented a second flag disposal drop box to Ace Hardware of Wautoma and Ace Hardware of Berlin that is located inside the stores. Redgranite currently has a disposal box located along State Rd. 21 in front of The Hair Shop.

When an American flag is faded and tattered, most people are not sure how to dispose of it properly. According to the United States Flag Code, an American flag should be retired when it is in such a condition that is “no longer a fitting emblem for display” and should be destroyed in a dignified way.

Scouts from Cub Scout Pack 3650 provided an easy way for people to retire their worn-out flags. Scouts in the Bear and Webelos dens showed their loyalty to their country as they built flag disposal drop boxes for their community. As part of their Build-It adventures the scouts learned tool safety, built several different items, used multiple hand tools to assemble the drop boxes then painted and finished them.

“This is a unique project since the scouts not only built the disposal drop boxes but will also be participating in future retirement ceremonies with legion members to properly retire the flags,” said Den Leader Greg Giebel.   Commander Wayne Lehmann of Post 370 stated, “We are grateful to Cub Scout pack 3650 for their creativity and show of patriotism for the flag disposal box donated to our Post.”
