There is a lot of inform-ation floating around about COVID-19. You may have read an article or heard something on television and thought one thing, and then talked with a neighbor and they heard just the opposite. The virus that causes COVID-19 is what we call a “novel” virus. “Novel” is just another word for “new”. There is a lot of information that we don’t know yet about the virus that causes COVID-19 because long-term research still needs to be done.

There are a few simple things that we do know, based on science, that we can follow to make sure we’re protecting ourselves, our loved ones, and our friends and neighbors. The basics of disease prevention and control come down to these easy steps to follow:

1. Stay home if you feel sick or if you have any symp-toms of COVID-19.

2. Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use a hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol.

3. Put distance between yourself and other people. In other words, stay at least 6 feet away from people who do not live in your household.

4. Use a face covering or face mask when you go out in public (make sure it covers your mouth and nose).

5. Do not attend large gatherings of people. Keep your social circle small.

The COVID-19 virus spreads through very small drops of water that come from your mouth. These germs can last on surfaces and can make others sick. Covering your mouth with a face covering will help these germs not spread. It is also important to use your elbow or a tissue to cover your cough and sneezes when you are not wearing a face covering.

These basic disease prevention approaches will help to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our communities and across our state.
