Information on Your Waushara County

Waushara County Veteran’s Services

I wanted to take time this Memorial Day week to focus on Veterans Services.

Every county in the State of Wisconsin is mandated by Wisconsin Statute to have an office dedicated to meeting the needs of veterans and their families. The mission of the Waushara County Veterans Services Office is “to provide caring, client focused counseling and assistance, and to act as an advocate for veterans, their dependents and survivors, in pursuit of federal, state and local benefits.”

In a nutshell, we help veterans, their dependents and their survivors better understand the benefits their service earned, and offer assistance in applying for, and gaining those benefits. We will also act as a referral agency to try to address needs that are not covered by specific federal or state veterans benefit programs.

As well as meeting the national mandate, so eloquently expressed by President Lincoln; “to care for him that shall have borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphan”, the office also imparts a true economic impact to the residents of Waushara County.

In fiscal year 2016, the office was successful in assisting veterans in gaining over $15 Million in federal benefits, such as disability compensation, pension benefits and VA medical care. The office works closely with the Department of Aging in providing transportation for our veterans to medical appointments at various VA facilities in the state, and through the Veterans Commission Fund, the office was able to provide over $12,000 in assistance to Waushara County veterans in need in calendar year 2016.
