Underage tobacco sales in Waushara County

The Wisconsin Wins program is a state-wide effort. Their goal is to lower the amount of illegal tobacco sales and keep youth tobacco-free. Since the campaign started, compliance checks have been done every year. All 72 counties take part in these inspections. During the checks, minors try to purchase tobacco products from local retailers.

Waushara County’s 2015 compliance checks were done by the Waushara County Health Department. A number of places were checked, with some of these retailers including bars, restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores.

Unfortunately, the number of sales that took place is very alarming. Of the 28 checks completed, nine underage sales took place. These numbers result in a 32.1 percent sales rate. That’s about 1 in 3 teens being able to buy a tobacco product in Waushara County.
