On Jan. 25 Joseph Ascher of the Wautoma Boys’ Basketball broke Wautoma’s all-time scoring record in a 73-25 win on the road against the Westfield Pioneers. Ascher’s 35 points were good enough to push him past his brother Gabriel Ascher who originally held the record at 1515 points in a career.
Joe, who is a young man of very few words after the game said, “I just want to thank my teammates, coaches, family, my dad, my brother, and Bryn.”
Head Coach Kyle Thompson had this to say, “I am very proud of Joseph and his accomplishment. He has earned this with years and years of hard work. I have had the fortunate opportunity to coach Joe all four years in high school and never once has he taken a day off. He is disciplined and hardworking. People see records get broken and they cheer and celebrate the accomplishment, as they should, but what should be applauded is the amount of time, hard work and sacrifice it goes into having the ability to be one of the best players in the state. You don’t just show up in November and end the season in March and have this kind of ability. Congratulations Joe, and I look forward to many more great moments this year.”
Joe also holds the school’s single game scoring record with 45 points which he has done twice this year, at home vs St. Mary’s Catholic and at home vs North Fond du Lac.
If you want to see Joseph and his teammates in action, their next game is on Friday, Feb. 9 at Nekoosa High School. The Hornets hope you come and pack the stands.
