Brian Butch Basketball Camp

Former University of Wisconsin-Madison Basketball Player Brian Butch traveled to Wautoma High School for the second year to host a youth basketball satellite camp on July 29. The camp brought in over 60 students from across the area ranging from 1st to 8th Grade.

Throughout day, Butch, along with his assistant coaches, led drills and games in order to help the students achieve success in basketball. The two hour morning session for 1st – 4th graders and three hour afternoon session of 5th – 8th graders allowed the campers to focus on fundamentals with students walking away with an increased desire for the game.

The Wautoma Backboard Club sponsored the Brian Butch Youth Basketball Camp with help from coordinators Dr. Dave Gruszka and Mike Pica. According to Gruszka, the camp was held in order “to teach, develop, and offer youth players the opportunity to learn the fundamental skills of basketball while instilling life-lessons and values such as character, teamwork, discipline, respect, and sportsmanship.”

Over the past several years, Wautoma Area School District staff members have collaborated with the guidance counselors to promote character education throughout all four schools. The WASD Character Education Committee believes it is important and necessary for staff, students, parents, and community members to help instill these values in the next generation

Planning is currently underway for the second district-wide Character Day on Wednesday, October 12, and the committee is looking to get the community involved. Any volunteers or community organizations interested in working with the WASD Character Day Committee should contact Julie Petersen (petersenj@wautoma.k12.wi.us) or Courtney Vaughan (vaughanc@wautoma.k12.wi.us) for more information.
