WASD CHARACTER IN ACTION:

Riverview Elementary Fish Parade

At the start of the second semester, the Riverview Elementary Steering Team brainstormed ideas on how to promote the Wautoma Area School District’s Work and People Skills in their classrooms and throughout the school.

The Steering Team selected a fish theme and introduced each featured skill and its indicators during Community Meetings through a fishing related skit. Once the skill was introduced, teachers would nominate students who met the indicator, and those students would be celebrated over the PA system. When their names were announced, students would come down to the office and fill out a fish to be featured on the all-school Work & People Skill bulletin board.

Each skill of Personal Responsibility, Work Habits, and Social Skills had different indicators, including staying on task and working cooperatively. Once all the indicators under the skill were featured, Riverview would celebrate those who were honored with a Work and People Skill Fish Parade. Students and staff would line the hallways and cheer the students who received a fish before heading to the all-school community meeting.

Over the past several years, Wautoma Area School District staff members have collaborated with the guidance counselors to promote character education throughout all four schools. The WASD Character Education Committee believes it is important and necessary for staff, students, parents, and community members to help instill these values in the next generation.

Planning is currently underway for the second district-wide Character Day on Wednesday, October 12, and the committee is looking to get the community involved. Any volunteers or community organizations interested in working with the WASD Character Day Committee should contact Julie Petersen (petersenj@wautoma.k12.wi.us) or Courtney Vaughan (vaughanc@wautoma.k12.wi.us) for more information.
