WASD Character in Action: RESPECT

When asked about what respect means, Parkside’s 5th-grade student, Alexandrea Woyak, had a great response. She said, “Respect is caring for an individual’s thoughts and feelings. Even though you may not agree with someone’s principles, still respect them.” She continued to talk about how it is also important to respect animals as well.  “Without animals, we would not have the basic needs to survive.”

Aleesha Whalen’s fifth-
grade class had some “peeps” stop by for a visit earlier this month. “We have spent many days this year building character within our classroom. As a teacher, I want to give my students the opportunity to build their character and grow as learners.  It was awesome to see their natural character come to life,” Whalen said.

Over the past several years, Wautoma Area School District staff members have collaborated with the guidance counselors to promote character education throughout all four schools. The WASD Character Education Committee believes it is important and necessary for staff, students, parents, and community members to help instill these values in the next generation.

Planning is currently underway for the second district-wide Character Day on Wednesday, October 12, and the committee is looking to get the community involved.
