On Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Waushara County Drug Endangered Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its seventh opportunity in four years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Preventing combine and tractor fires

Combine and tractor fires cause over $20 million in property losses each year and millions more because of lost time and downed crops during the busy harvest season. Fires not only cause huge losses and waste time, they also cause 40 or 50 serious injuries each year, and occasionally a person is killed because of a farm machinery fire. Prevention and preparation are two keys to preventing serious machinery or life loss.

For the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office, nothing says working together any better than Crime Stoppers.  Waushara County Crime Stoppers was organized by Sheriff Pat Fox and remains a major factor in my continued goal of improving law enforcement services to residents, property owners, and visitors.

A parent’s guide to recognizing drug use

Drug use has hit epidemic proportions in Wisconsin and in the nation at large, and Waushara County has not been immune to this devastating trend. While experimenting with drugs doesn’t automatically lead to drug abuse, early use is a risk factor for developing more serious drug abuse and addiction. Risk of drug abuse can increase greatly during times of stress, such as changing schools, moving, or a divorce. It is often difficult for parents to tell the difference between the normal ups and downs of teenagers and the red flags of drug abuse. Some of the signs and symptoms of drug abuse include:

Both Class III and Class IV milk prices January through August have been higher each month than last year. The Class III price during this period averaged $17.71 this year compared to $16.23 last year.

Grain markets going down

Current production estimates for corn and soybeans have been increased with the last projection by the US Department of Agriculture. The markets were increasing for a short period of time but now have been slowly working their way back down.

It’s time to get your flu shot 

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. While there are many different flu viruses, a flu vaccine protects against the three viruses that research suggests will be most common. The Flu- Mist vaccine this year, for the first time, protects against four viruses.
