A small challenge often results in a large reward.  This will be the case when the “Biggest Little Fair in Wisconsin” returns to the Waushara County Fairgrounds Aug. 15–18.  Getting to the fairgrounds will be the challenge, but once again the fair promises to be a fun-filled event with something for young and old.

Deaths from prescription painkiller overdoses rise sharply among women

A new report from the CDC indicates that women are at a higher risk for overdose and addiction to prescription opioids (painkillers) than men. Nearly 48,000 women died of prescription painkiller overdoses between 1999 and 2010.

Long-term drought effects on trees

Even though we have had a wet spring and early summer, we are continually seeing more trees and shrubs that are dying. I have received a number of calls on maple trees that are dying or that have cracks in the bark with dead areas of bark on the tree. There are a number of elm trees that I have seen that were all leafed out but in the last couple of weeks the leaves have now died back, turned brown and are now falling off.

As you drive around Waushara County and Wisconsin you may notice Adopt-A-Highway signs along the roadway. These areas are usually a two-mile segment that individuals or groups sign up to remove litter along the roadways. This program was started by the Department of Transportation and has been very successful.

Waushara County will be experiencing several road construction projects during the next few weeks.  Sheriff’s Deputies will be working these construction areas to help ensure the safety of the construction workers.  There will be very little tolerance for violations that put others at risk and the forfeitures for violations in constructions zones are double.

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism estimates that $63 million was spent by tourists in Waushara County in 2012.  Indirectly tourism accounts for $85 million in business sales in Waushara County.  An analysis of 2007 data provided by the US Census Bureau and US Department of Agriculture shows that 19 percent of private sector jobs in Waushara County are directly impacted by tourism within the county.  Tourism is a significant industrial sector for Waushara County.

Organ and tissue donations:

Saving lives after death

The need for organ and tissue donations is great. According to UW Health, more than 116,000 people in the US are waiting for an organ transplant. Every day, 11 people will be added to that transplant waiting list, and 19 people will die waiting for an organ that is necessary for their survival. In Waushara County, 51.9 percent of drivers said yes to organ donation in 2012, which is less than the state average of 56.2 percent. UW Health holds the third largest Transplant Program in the nation, yet more than 2,000 people in Wisconsin still await an organ transplant.
