Local control of siting of livestock facilities taken away
Tuesday, February 25, 2014 6:51 AM

To the Editor:

The Wisconsin Livestock Siting Law passed in 2004 and implemented by Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection  (DATCP) 51 in 2006 effectively took away local control of the siting of livestock facilities within our communities in favor of making a more predictable statewide rule and path for the expansion of large Concentrated Animal Feed Operations (CAFOs) more commonly known as Factory Farms.  By looking at expansion of the industry alone,  the law has been a success, the CAFO industry has grown from only 2 CAFO’s in Wisconsin in 1995 to over 235 today.

Wautoma resident raises awareness for Children of Alcoholics Week
Tuesday, February 11, 2014 6:52 AM

To the Editor:

The week of Feb. 9 -15 is Children of Alcoholics Week. The National Association of Children of Alcoholics sponsors this recognition event.  My mother’s alcoholism greatly affected me. I read many books about addiction and affected families. I later attended a support group with other adult children. I went to seminars and learned how to cope with the aftermath of this sneaky disease, which impacts the whole family.

Part-time resident expresses gratitude for Wautoma's kindness
Tuesday, February 11, 2014 6:49 AM

To the Editor:

Today I had very pleasant encounters at three different places of business in Wautoma as I attempted to print and mail an important letter. I had worked late into the previous evening trying to print a letter from my laptop computer. My printer was not cooperating so, I telephoned first to Ace Hardware where a website indicated they had printing services.  “No, we have a copy machine but no printers.  Try the Argus,” said the first helpful Ace staff member.

Mayor’s Corner: Wautoma’s Mayor John Nixon responds to city issues and concerns

I would like to thank the writers and callers for bringing to my attention the city’s grinder pump issues. This seems to me to be a very large issue for the residents who have these pumps on their properties.
