Coloma resident looks for support regarding high capacity wells

It has now been a few weeks since the beautiful July 4 weekend. We have fallen back into the workweek, as the end of summer seems right around the corner. But I can’t help but reminisce about the time “before”.  Before the Richfield CAFO was announced in our back yard; Before we learned how our water was at risk; Before our nearby friends showed us how their lake is almost gone; Before we were taught about how our prized streams may not support trout habitat...Before we took legal action to protect our water.

 
Wautoma resident voices opinion on new dining hall

To the editor,

This letter is in response to the letter from Gail Schwersenska that appeared in the July 9 issue of the Waushara Argus. Wautoma or Waushara County doesn’t need another building when it already has an excellent one in the Waushara-Wautoma Senior Citizens Center. This proposed building will only serve the immediate Wautoma area. The Wautoma Senior Center averages about 15 people a day. As mentioned in the July 9 article an increase from 27 percent seniors in the county to a future projected 37 percent only adds five to that average, which the current center can handle with ease.

I’ve been gone several weeks teaching at my favorite music camps and returned to read yesterday’s Argus.

WOW!  Double WOW!!!  I absolutely LOVE the Blue Background (with white lettering) headlines....especially Government, Community Calendar and Did You Miss?

Sometimes people forget to compliment one another...but not THIS time!!

I know you will distribute KUDOS to the appropriate staffers responsible for this EXCITING new look!!

Is the size and parking adequate?

Is this new building a need or just a desire? I attend a lot of activities at the Senior Center and eat at the meal site which a number of others do as well. With the meal site being at the Senior Center and the Senior Center offering activities it does build up the number of participants. All of the ones that come to the meal site that I have talked to are well satisfied with the current location. Most of those people doubt they will go to the new location. The new building will have seating for 54 (round tables) and (auditorium seating) for 100 but yet only 18 parking spaces have been planned.

Where are all the others to park? Remember that this program is for the senior population (60 years and older) with walkers with canes, and even without those seniors may not be as stable on their feet as the younger generation. Also, since there is no parking on Division Street where are they to park?In the Sheriff’s office parking lot? What about emergencies? I see this as a problem.

The size of the new meeting room, 1360 sq. feet according to the Department of Aging (DOA) information, is only about half the size of the demo room at the Courthouse, so there will still have to be meetings at the courthouse and really this building has solved none of those issues. I don’t see this as a gain.

According to the DOA’s Loose Ends, the cost of maintenance would be $12,000 a year (subject to change), but what they don’t say is that this is versus the current amount of $1,800 a year. The $1,800 includes five day a week access and none of the worry with upkeep equipment or the building as a whole. This $1,800 a year also includes seating for over 100 who would be able to eat, not auditorium style with a very large parking lot able to accommodate large crowds, plus a large basement that can be used for a storm shelter.

I feel the Senior Center will be a better choice and meet the needs of the community as a whole. Let’s keep harmony in our Community.
