Hi-Lo Bowling League holds food drive
Monday, December 23, 2013 6:29 AM

Members of the Hi-Lo Tuesday Women’s Bowling League at Dogger’s Lanes, Wautoma, spread holiday cheer by hosting a special food drive, including hot chocolate and oranges, for the Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program. This is the second food drive to support the program sponsored by the bowling team during the current school year.

The Vision 2020 Backpack Nutrition Program provides weekly weekend meals to 64 students attending Waushara County’s highest needs school.

In Waushara County, 57 percent of public school children receive free/reduced lunch as compared to 41 percent of students statewide. In one local elementary school, the free/reduced lunch rate soars to 73 percent of students. Over 600 packets of oatmeal, 130 jars of peanut butter, and packets of tuna, along with 260 vouchers for fresh food and other food items, are distributed to students each month. In 2014, the program will expand to serve elementary school students in another high needs school.

The program depends on the support it receives from individuals, churches, businesses, civic, and community-based organizations that donate cash, organize food drives, or purchase food items used by the program.

The program operates with the support of grants received from the Alliant Energy Foundation, Community Health Network Foundation, and the Walmart Foundation.
