To the Editor,

Labor Day has come and gone.  For many, it’s the last long weekend to celebrate the summer season.  But it is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers whose contributions are the foundation of the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.  Its origins date back to 1885 and 1886 when municipal ordinances were passed to recognize workers. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation.  The first Labor Day law was passed by Oregon on Feb. 21, 1887, and more states followed.

In addition, over 700 gifts were distributed to the needy children.
