Shopping safety tips

The Waushara County Sheriff’s Office reminds you that it is important every day to protect yourself from becoming a victim while shopping, but this is especially important during the busy Christmas season.  Consider the following suggestions:

Slippery roads

The light shines across the yard at 5 a.m. to reveal a fresh snow that has covered the last leaves that I failed to rake from the yard.  It is the first snow fall of the year because “you can track a cat.”  Just some minor shoveling to do in front of the garage and around the outdoor wood burner, no big deal.  Shower, shave, breakfast, and ready for work when the phone rings at 6:50 a.m. “Can you come to work right away?  We got cars in the ditch all over the place,” reports the dispatcher. The reality of that first snowfall suddenly sinks in.

Unfortunately this time of the year increases the number of trespass to land complaints received by law enforcement.  As is too often the case, a few persons that identify themselves as hunters are NOT sports men or women.  Trespass is not the responsibility of the Department of Natural Resources, but generally falls on the shoulders of Sheriff’s Deputies.

Winter driving

A wintry-mix is in the air and day time temperatures are taking a dive below freezing, inching ever closer to averages in the single digits and flirting with plus or minus 0 degrees.  It’s a stark reminder that during the cold weather months, all drivers should follow common-sense precautions that will protect them and others on the road.

Speed limit enforcement is a well-known function of law enforcement officers.  Unfortunately many motorists don’t have a good understanding of the reason and importance of obeying the variety of speed limits that they come in contact with every day.

The fall hunting season, especially the gun deer season, brings the potential for conflict between landowners and hunters. When common sense, respect, and compromise between these parties fail, law enforcement is asked to step in.  When safety regulations are not adhered to, injuries and death can occur.  Whether it’s a stray bullet or a fall from a tree stand without safety precautions, bad things happen to good people.

Early sunset, late sunrise, overcast skies, rain, and fog are all part of fall in Waushara County.  Cold, ice, and snow can’t be far behind.  Enjoy the changing seasons safely while driving.

On Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Waushara County Drug Endangered Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its seventh opportunity in four years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Nothing says “Rural America” any better than concerned citizens working together for the good of the entire community.

For the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office, nothing says working together any better than Crime Stoppers.  Waushara County Crime Stoppers was organized by Sheriff Pat Fox and remains a major factor in my continued goal of improving law enforcement services to residents, property owners, and visitors.
