Benefit changes for Wisconsin Veterans

With the recent passing of the budget, there have been some exciting changes to the benefits administered by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA).

The “Wisconsin Veterans and Surviving Spouse Property Tax Credit” grants 100 percent Service Connected Disabled Veterans and their Surviving Spouse, the ability to request a refund of their property taxes.

As you drive around Waushara County and Wisconsin you may notice Adopt-A-Highway signs along the roadway. These areas are usually a two-mile segment that individuals or groups sign up to remove litter along the roadways. This program was started by the Department of Transportation and has been very successful.

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism estimates that $63 million was spent by tourists in Waushara County in 2012.  Indirectly tourism accounts for $85 million in business sales in Waushara County.  An analysis of 2007 data provided by the US Census Bureau and US Department of Agriculture shows that 19 percent of private sector jobs in Waushara County are directly impacted by tourism within the county.  Tourism is a significant industrial sector for Waushara County.

Postponed tax payments

If your real estate tax bill qualifies, you are given the option of paying a first installment on or before Jan. 31 and the second installment or postponed installment being due on or before July 31. Notices are not sent to remind you to make the installment payment by July 31. You should check your receipt/payment record for the amount paid on the first installment to be sure that your second installment amount is correct. If you paid an amount different than the amount shown on the payment stub then the second installment payment stub amount would be different.

Those lazy days of summer we wish for all year may be setting the stage for your child to gain weight. That was the finding of research published in the American Journal of Public Health, which showed that kids often put on added pounds during the summer. The study attributes the weight gains to kids’ lack of physical activity and too much eating between meals.
