A parent’s guide to recognizing drug use

Drug use has hit epidemic proportions in Wisconsin and in the nation at large, and Waushara County has not been immune to this devastating trend. While experimenting with drugs doesn’t automatically lead to drug abuse, early use is a risk factor for developing more serious drug abuse and addiction. Risk of drug abuse can increase greatly during times of stress, such as changing schools, moving, or a divorce. It is often difficult for parents to tell the difference between the normal ups and downs of teenagers and the red flags of drug abuse. Some of the signs and symptoms of drug abuse include:

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. While there are many different flu viruses, a flu vaccine protects against the three viruses that research suggests will be most common. The Flu- Mist vaccine this year, for the first time, protects against four viruses.

First bird in Waushara County tests positive for the West Nile Virus


The Waushara County Health Department reports a dead crow found in Waushara County on Aug. 2 has tested positive for West Nile virus.  This is the first bird that tested positive in Waushara County since surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted virus began May 1.

Deaths from prescription painkiller overdoses rise sharply among women

A new report from the CDC indicates that women are at a higher risk for overdose and addiction to prescription opioids (painkillers) than men. Nearly 48,000 women died of prescription painkiller overdoses between 1999 and 2010.
