Flu season is here and more and more people across the country are getting sick. The American Red Cross urges people to get vaccinated and offers tips everyone can follow to help prevent the spread of the flu.

What Should You Know about the Shingles Vaccine? Print E-mail

You may have heard about a vaccination that is available for the prevention of shingles. The vaccine is known as Zostavax. Shingles or “zoster” is a painful rash that occurs along a nerve on one side of the body that lasts about three weeks. It is a common problem with about one in five people having the problem sometime in their life. The symptoms are pain along the nerve that is infected followed by blisters and rash and then scabs. Some cases can be mild but some cases can be severe and cause pain for months to years. Cases tend to be more severe in older individuals. The vaccination has been promoted to prevent shingles.

January 2014 has been declared “National Radon Action Month” according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Health agencies throughout the United States have joined forces to promote awareness of the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. The American Lung Association, Centers for Disease Control, and National Cancer Institute all agree that radon is a national health problem and encourage radon testing during the January awareness drive.

The Community Health Network system of clinics has announced their hours for the holiday season. All CHN clinics, including the CHN Walk-In Clinic, will close at Noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and will be closed all day on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day (Wednesday, December 25, 2013 and Wednesday, Jan. 1) to allow employees to spend time with their families.
