Community Health Network celebrates National Radiologic Technology Week, recognizing the vital work of its dedicated team of Radiologic Technologists. The celebration takes place each November to commemorate the anniversary of the x-ray’s discovery by German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895. The week-long celebration calls attention to the important role professionals in medical imaging and radiation therapy play in patient care and health care safety.

Is colon cancer preventable?

Last week I wrote about cancer screening in general. In this article, I will focus on colon cancer.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women. One in 20, or five percent of, Americans will come down with colon cancer in their lifetime. Each year there are 152,000 new cases and 50,000 deaths from colon cancer in the United States.

November is American Diabetes Month, a time to raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes in our communities. Unfortunately, nearly 15,000 people in Green Lake, Marquette and Waushara Counties have diabetes, and studies are showing that rates of pre-diabetes are also on the rise. In fact, 79 million Americans are estimated to have pre-diabetes.

In 1971, then president Richard Nixon signed legislation that has been labeled as the start of the “war on cancer.” Although the expectations were high, the results have not been as successful as expected. There have been victories in the battle but cancer remains a significant health concern.  As heart disease death rates decline, cancer is now the leading cause of death in Americans less than 85 years old.
