Verna Lucile Shead (nee Buschke), 91, a resident of Preston Place C.B.R.F. in Redgranite, formerly of the Town of Marion, rural Neshkoro, passed away Saturday morning, August 23, 2014 at Preston Place.

Verna was born May 15, 1923 on a farm in the Town of Coloma, the daughter of Frederick Rudolph and Nellia (Humphrey) Buschke. She was educated in the Forest City Grade School, Town of Richford, and was a 1941 Graduate of the Wautoma High School. She then attended Waushara County Normal School for two years for teacher training. Verna‚Äôs first job was at Richford School, where she taught 28 students in grades 1 to 8.  She had also taught at the Colebrook School outside Wautoma. Verna married Lawrence O. Shead on June 8, 1946 in Wautoma. He preceded Verna in death on July 25, 1982 at age 63 after 36 years of marriage.

Verna also worked at Badger Ordinance Works the summer of 1945, where she packaged gunpowder during World War II. She was a school bus driver for local grade schools from 1953 to 1962. Verna was appointed Town Clerk for the Town of Marion in 1968. She continued as Clerk until 1981. She was a substitute Rural Mail Carrier for the Neshkoro Post Office from July of 1977 to August of 1985. Verna was employed as an Addressograph Operator and Inserter for the Berlin Journal Newspapers from Sept. of 1990 until her retirement on July 26, 2006, at age 83.

Verna is a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Neshkoro, and was a long time member of the former Spring Lake United Methodist Church until it closed in 1994.

Verna lived on the farm in rural Neshkoro until she became a resident of Patriot Place in Berlin, prior to becoming a resident of Preston Place in Redgranite.

Survivors include: her daughter: Janet (Michael) Shanklin, Redgranite; a son:

Jerry Lawrence (Jeanne) Shead, Berlin; five grand-children, two great-grand-children, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

In addition to her husband, Lawrence, Verna was also preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Elwood Buschke and M. Eldon Buschke.

Funeral services for Verna L. Shead will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27. at the Ruminski Funeral Home, Redgranite, with the Rev. George H. Groves officiating. Following these services, Verna will be laid to rest beside her husband, Lawrence, in the Shead Island Cemetery, Town of Aurora.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday morning only prior to the time of services at the Ruminski Funeral Home. A Memorial has been established.
