Jack E. Burgess Print E-mail

March 22, 1932-June 13, 2014

Jack E. Burgess, 82, a lifelong resident of Geneva, IL, passed away Friday, June 13, 2014 following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Jack died at his home in Geneva surrounded by family.

He was born March 22, 1932 in Madison, the son of F. E. and Mary (Gahagan) Burgess.

Jack attended the University of Cincinnati prior to being drafted into the US army where he served his country during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning, he attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Jack worked for the family business, Burgess-Norton, for many years. The business was sold and in 1974    Jack then began commuting to the family tree farm in Coloma. He preferred working in the outdoors over his years behind the desk and truly enjoyed his second career. The family became a wholesaler of Christmas trees to various locations nationwide and even had a tree lot in Geneva. Jack was an animal lover and found great pleasure in traveling, particularly in the Western US. He was also a member of the Geneva Auxiliary Fire Department for 18 years, a Trustee of the Fabyan Foundation and a lifelong member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva. Jack’s greatest joy, however, was being with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.

Jack is survived by his children: Tom (Lindsey) Burgess, Geneva, IL; and Mitzi (Steve) Weiss, Wheaton, IL; grandchildren: Brad and Lauren Burgess, and Max and Jack Weiss; and many dear cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Christl, who passed away in 2011; his parents; and in-laws: Rudolf and Augusta (Roth) Weis.

Visitation was held on June 16 and June 17. There was a Funeral Mass at St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva, IL. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery, Geneva.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the “Christl Burgess Memorial Fund” at Loyola University Medical Center, 2160 1st Avenue, Maywood, IL, 60153 would be greatly appreciated.

The Malone Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements,
