Auburndale Lady Eagles claw the Wautoma Lady Hornets

Subhead
Wautoma Lady Hornet softball took one on the chin losing 12-7 to the Auburndale Lady Falcons on March 28 in their home opener. The Hornets scored first in the bottom half of one on a one-out Bryn Gunderson RBI sacrifice scoring Ava Stahl. Auburndale retaliated with four runs in the second and one run in the third inning making it 5-1. Wautoma fought back with two runs in the third and four in the fourth inning to build a 7-5 lead. Yet, Auburndale clawed back in the sixth inning to regain the lead 8-7 off of a couple walks, a timely hit and a Lady Hornet miscue. The Lady Eagles would extend the lead to 12-7 in the 7th inning as sloppy Hornet defense allowed four unearned runs. Wautoma would attempt to mount a comeback in the bottom portion with bases loaded and one out, however, back-to-back strikeouts ended that possibility. “I thought Liv did a great enough job to potentially earn a victory along with Ava Stahl’s solid effort, however, our team defense was hideous. It is tough to win ballgames when you allow your opponent their fair share of extra outs,” Coach Butt mentioned. He added they need to get better in that department along with a few base running mistakes. The two Ava’s (Stahl/Butt) led the Hornet offensive attack as the team collected eight total hits (6 free passes) - Ava Stahl (2x3, 2 SB’s, 2 runs, BB), Ava Butt (2x4, RBI), Brianna Buechner (1x3, SB, run), Sydney Dunn (1x3, RBI, run, BB), Liv Cieslik (1-1, 2 SB, 2 BB, HBP, run), Braelynn Pica (1x2, BB, run). Cieslik took the loss pitching 6 innings, 3 K’s, 5 BB’s, 5 Hits and five earned runs while Stahl came in relief one inning giving up two walks with one hit and no earned runs. The Hornets fall to 1-3 on the season.
