Body
J Smith left us all on April 7, 2024. He passed away at his home outside of Wautoma very peacefully.
J was born in Evanston IL on July 30, 1949. He had a fun childhood swimming in Lake Michigan, helping his dad in the yard, running around with friends and his twin brother, Jim.
After graduating from New Trier High School, J served in the Navy for 4 years as an electrical mechanic on the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. After his service, J moved to the Wautoma area. He was very proud of his military background and became involved in the local American Legion post in Adams, WI. He served as their historian for a number of years, and supported the veterans in the area in a variety of capacities. J was also proud of the volunteer work he did with the Fox Ridge Wildlife Refuge. Here, J healed and nurtured injured or sick animals bringing them back to health. His most rewarding rehabilitation was a bald eagle. With pride and awe, he would share his story and the joy he felt watching that eagle fly safely back to nature. He had other endeavors over the years; He sold pellet fuel to local residents. He installed flag poles for many but was so happy to erect a pole in a veterans’ yard so they could proudly fly the American flag. His support for veterans and animals never wavered.
J is survived by his twin brother Jim and Jim’s wife Jo, his nephew Kurt, his niece Andrea and his great nieces and nephews.
A ceremony for J will be held May 20th at 11 am at the Central WI Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Waupaca, WI. Reception to follow at the VFW post at 244 Industrial Dr. Waupaca, WI. Please RSVP to Marc at vexthem@yahoo.com or text to 847-691-5994.
