As Pi Day approached this year, the community of Waushara County braced itself for an annual tradition that went beyond just indulging in sweet treats. For the past six years, Victor Magnus, a local business owner, has spearheaded a unique celebration, blending the joy of Pi Day with a commitment to giving back to the community.
Since its inception, Rural Mutual Insurance: Victor Magnus Agency has donated a total of $1025 to various local organizations through creative Pi Day festivities. Each year, a different organization was carefully selected to receive the funds, ensuring a broad impact across diverse causes.
Past years donation recipients include: 2023 – Wautoma Police Department Benevolent Fund; 2022 – Wautoma Area Fire Department; 2021 – Plainfield Fire Department; 2020 – Local Family; 2019 – Hancock Community Center; and 2018 – Wautoma Food Pantry.
This year marked a significant milestone as anonymous donors stepped forward with an additional $300 contribution, enabling the Victor Magnus Agency to make a total donation of $500. This outpouring of generosity underscored the community’s dedication to supporting essential initiatives.
A core aspect of this annual event was the cherished tradition of being “pied” by Victor’s own children, eagerly awaiting their turn to participate in giving back. Their enthusiasm served as a testament to the spirit of community and altruism that defined this event.
In a bold move to further engage the community, Victor Magnus extended a challenge to Brigette Henschel, TreeHouse Central WI, inviting her to take a pie to the face live on Facebook. Henschel’s acceptance of the challenge promised to add an exciting new dimension to this year’s festivities.
“This event has gradually transformed into a fun means of giving back to the supportive community,” reflected Victor Magnus. “In 2023, I took the initiative to challenge Wautoma Police Chief Paul Mott, not only to promote the receiving organization, but also to spread the fun. It was truly heartening to see others join in supporting such a meaningful cause. Together, we were able to make a tangible difference.”
As Pi Day approaches on March 14th next year, organizational leaders should be prepared for potential challenges.
