Vaccines and regular well visits are recommended for the family

If you and your family have not visited the doctor recently due to COVID-19, please do not delay regular care and important vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that vaccination is an essential preventive care service during this pandemic. Vaccines are especially important for children, but adults should not ignore them. For example, aside from a flu vaccine each year, the CDC recommends that adults get a tetanus and diphtheria (Td) or a tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine every ten years. There are other vaccines your doctor may recommend based on your age, job type, health status or lifestyle habits.

Why are vaccines so important? “There are many harmful diseases that we can prevent by receiving vaccines,” says Dr. Anne Means, Pediatrician at Family Health La Clinica. “Not only do they protect you and your child, but they also protect those around you. When more people are vaccinated, the less likely diseases are to spread. They are a safe and effective way to prevent serious illness and death.”

If you are not sure when you or your child received your last vaccines, do not worry. All vaccines are entered into a registry so your doctor can see when you or your child are due for follow up vaccinations. You can also visit cdc.gov/vaccines for more information on vaccines and when they are recommended.

Well-child exams are a great time for your child to receive needed vaccines. During these visits, you will also get updates and support to ensure your child is happy and healthy as they grow. At Family Health La Clinica, your child will also get a free book with any well-child exam for those aged six months to five years as part of the Reach Out and Read program. Family Health La Clinica medical providers will give you a book in the language of your choice and give tips on how you can read with your child. Books are available in English, Spanish, or bilingual English and Spanish.
